Subject: CANET: e-mail lists for campus activists

Dear Friend, revised: 7/21/95

We are writing because the UCP's Center for Campus Organizing is
setting up some mailing lists to promote communication between campus
activists. This project is callet CANet -- short for the Campus
Activists' Network. The Center for Campus Organizing is a national
clearinghouse based in Cambridge, MA, USA, originally established in
1991 as the University Conversion Project (UCP). CCO promotes
progressive activism and investigative journalism on college campuses.
We invite other campus groups working for social justice to
participate in this project.

We have not yet added you to any mailing lists. We are asking you
to try one or more lists which address the topics listed below. Since the
lists are new and will be moderated (actually the term we are using is
"facilitated"), your mailbox will not be deluged.

The Campus Activists' NETwork is currently divided into eleven
areas, each of which may be subscribed to individually. Starred (*)
lists are high-volume discussions with over 400 subscribers at this time:

1. CAN-EC -- Economic Conversion. For campus activists who want
to cut the military budget and put the money where it's needed.
2. CAN-RW -- Right Wing Alert. A discussion about the campus
response to Right-wing trends in the US and on Campus.*
3. CAN-SR -- Social Responsibility in the Curriculum. For those
working to get peace studies, ethics in science, multicultural
requirements, or environmental studies in the curriculum.
4. CAN-AR -- Anti-Racism. For campus activists involved in
    anti-racism activities. Facilitator(s) sought.
5. CAN-YFN -- Young Feminist Network. For people who are involved in
feminist campus organizations or who want to start one.
6. CAN-ER -- Educational Rights. For people who are organizing against
tuition increases and efforts to cut funding for higher education.*
7. CAN-FAC -- Faculty Activist Network. Sponsored by CCO and Teachers
For a Democratic Culture; working on "Is Truth for Sale?" project.
8. CAN-ALERT -- Action Alerts of the Center for Campus Organizing.
Not a discussion list; subscribe for infrequent, "emergency" alerts.

The last four lists are restricted subscription:
9. CAN-AJ -- Campus Alternative Journalism. Restricted to people who
    are creating alternative campus media.
10. CAN-BC -- Boston Center. Discussion about setting up a new Boston
Center for Campus Activism. Restricted to Boston area activists.
11. NETWORK -- For campus contacts working on a networking project that
has been initated to followup the March 1995 National Day of Campus
Action Against the Contract With America. To subscribe, please
register your name, address, phone number, and name of your campus
group with the Center for Campus Organizing (contact kowan@ai.mit.edu).
12. SCO -- For State coordinators in the network project.

With few exceptions, it is not possible to send mail to any of these
lists unless you subscribe first.

--How to subscribe and unsubscribe one of these lists-------------------

You can subscribe yourself to any of these lists by sending an email
message with a subject of "CANET" whose body consists of the following:

SUB <name-of-list> <your first and last name>

to the electronic mail address:

CANET@PENCIL.CS.MISSOURI.EDU

Since the public lists CAN-AR, CAN-EC, CAN-SR, CAN-RW, and CAN-ER
are linked to CAN-ALL, subscribing to one of these five lists while
you are subscribed to CAN-ALL will result in duplicate messages.

CANCELING YOUR SUBSCRIPTION

You can unsubscribe yourself to any of these lists by sending an email
message with a subject of "CANET" whose body consists of the following:

UNSUB <NAME-OF-LIST>

to the electronic mail address:

CANET@PENCIL.CS.MISSOURI.EDU

--Receiving your mail in "digest" form-----------------------------------

If you'd rather receive a few "bundled" mail messages than lots of little
ones, try the putting "set <list> mail digest" in a request, i.e.

SUBSCRIBE CAN-SR Moon Zappa
SET CAN-SR mail digest

would subscribe Moon Zappa to the Social Responsibility list, and then
change her mail delivery mode to "digest" which means that messages will
be accumulated and sent to her in "bundles." To turn bundling off, send
a message to canet@pencil.cs.missouri.edu containing the line:

SET CAN-SR mail ack

--Future CANet lists; other campus lists; CANET advisors --------------

We are currently forming an advisory board to this project which will
make decisions on adding lists to the system. If you are interested
on serving on the advisory board, please send us email describing
your activist qualifications at facil@pencil.cs.missouri.edu .

Our current policy for expanding this system is not to add lists in
areas where effective campus activist focused lists already exist.
Here is information on two such lists, SEACNET and QUEERCAMPUS:

Name of List Send "Subscribe <listname> <yourname>" message to:

seac+announce listserv@ecosys.drdr.virginia.edu
                (serves campus environmental groups)

queercampus MAJORDOMO@vector.casti.com
                (serves l/g/b/o campus communities)

--For More Information-----------------------------------------------

When you subscribe, you will receive additional instructions about
sending mail, guidelines for discussions, etc. If you want that information
now, send an email message to CANET-INFO@PENCIL.CS.MISSOURI.EDU.

Finally, since computers can only do a small part of what is necessary
to promote activism on campus, we want to let you know how to contact
our office, get copies of back issues of our newsletter (with graphics
and charts), and get human advice on your campus organizing. Please
call Jeremy, Nicole, or Rich from 11am-7pm e.s.t., at:
